Wood Demand Report

Third Quarter 2008 Update

Pine sawtimber demand continued to fall at sawmills across the South.  Sawmills and plywood facilities consumed 2.2% less sawtimber during the third quarter and 12.8% less since one year ago.  Pine chip-n-saw demand fell 10.6% during the quarter and 29% since this time last year.  Demand for hardwood grade also declined.

Pine pulpwood demand decreased slightly during the quarter.  Several pulp mills shifted from hardwood to pine, contributing to a decrease in hardwood pulpwood use.  The net decrease in pine pulpwood receipts was driven by falling consumption at OSB mills, though demand at energy and biomass facilities continues to inch up.
